KANE APPOINTED AS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Barry A. Cassidy, Ph.D., P.A.-C, Arizona Medical Board Executive Director, has promoted Barbara J. Kane as Assistant Director in charge of the agency’s Investigations and Quality Assurance Divisions.

Cassidy sought Ms. Kane for this position based on her extensive investigative experience and significant accomplishments, as one of the Board’s senior medical investigators and creator of the agency’s first ever Quality Assurance Division. “She has the energy and talent to take the agency’s investigative infrastructure to another level,” said Cassidy. “Every citizen who files a complaint against a physician must be confident in the Board’s ability to thoroughly and fairly investigate that complaint. Ms. Kane is exactly the person I trust to build on that level of confidence. She will serve as an excellent counterpart to the current Assistant Director of Licensing and Operations, Amanda Diehl,” said Cassidy.

As Assistant Director, Kane is responsible for implementing the agency’s new workflow process, training and development of sound investigative techniques, and coordinating the Staff Investigational Review Committee. “This is a challenging opportunity to utilize all of my career experiences,” said Kane. “I look forward to building upon the agency’s many impressive successes,” she added.

Kane began her career with the Arizona Medical Board in June 2000 as a Senior Medical Investigator and was promoted to Assistant Director/Investigations & Quality Assurance in 2003. She was the driving force behind the Board’s first ever Quality Assurance Division, an innovative program designed to enhance the Board’s responsiveness to the public and the quality of investigative procedures. Under her leadership, the Quality Assurance Division implemented a system to bring major case developments to the surface quickly and make supplemental confirming evidence available as a resource in the adjudicative process.

Prior to joining the Arizona Medical Board, Kane was a disability determinations manager and a medical malpractice investigator for over 20 years in New York State. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Hunter College in New York City and is a licensed New York State teacher and reading specialist, as well as a certified New York State Public Adjuster.

The Arizona Medical Board is comprised of 12 members, including four public members and eight physicians. Board members are appointed by the Governor and may serve up to two five-year terms. The Board is responsible for licensing and disciplining over 15,000 medical doctors in Arizona.
